Wondering what to do with your apartment for the summer?

28.03.2019

Are you leaving Tampere for the summer? Did you know that you can assign your apartment to another tenant if you’re not going to live in it during your temporary absence? If you’re going to terminate your tenancy agreement for the summer, remember that we will give priority and offer vacant and soon-to-be-vacant shared apartments to new out-of-town students at the end of summer and in the fall. If you still need your apartment after the summer, one option is to temporarily assign the apartment to another tenant for the summer, after which you will get your apartment back.

Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Find a temporary tenant for your apartment.
  2. Fill out the “temporary assignment of a residential apartment” form together with the temporary tenant. You can find the form on our website.
  3. Sign the form with your temporary tenant, add any necessary documents to it and deliver the form to TOAS’s housing office one month before the temporary assignment begins.
  4. Please note that your tenancy agreement, as well as your responsibility for the apartment and paying rent, will remain the same during the temporary assignment.

We do not require a reason for temporary assignment during the summer (May–August), and the temporary resident does not need to be a student. Keep in mind, however, that the temporary resident of a shared apartment must be the same gender as the original tenant.

Furthermore, remember that TOAS’s tenancy agreement forbids subleasing the apartment. This includes renting and hosting through Airbnb, for example. When renting an apartment through Airbnb, the lessor can make a profit with their apartment. According to our rules, profiting from the temporary assignment of an apartment is forbidden.
