Apartment typesStudio, shared apartment or a family apartment, which is right for you? We also offer no deposit -apartments and short-term residency.

Shared Apartments

A room in a shared apartment is normally the apartment type that is the easiest and fastest to get. In a shared apartment you will have your own individual bedroom, and you will share the kitchen and the bathroom with 1-3 other students of the same gender. Pets are not allowed in shared apartments.

All bedroom doors have locks – your privacy is secured.

When living in a shared apartment, all tenants are responsible for their own rooms. Together they are also responsible for cleaning the common areas in the apartment.

A room in a shared apartment is the most affordable option.

When applying via regular application, all shared apartments are unfurnished, except Mikontalo.

When applying via international application (for new incoming international students moving from abroad), all rooms are always furnished. Make sure you choose the correct application!

Family Apartments

TOAS offers a selection of family apartments, from one-bedroom up to three-bedroom apartments. When applying for a family apartment, applicants with under-aged children are prioritized in queuing. You can apply if at least one of the couple is a student in Tampere. You can also apply for a family apartment with a friend or a sibling and only one of you needs to be student in Tampere.

For those who appreciate a spacious apartment, a studio or a family apartment is a good option.

You can also apply for a family apartment alone, partner or family is not required. The waiting time for a family apartment differs according to the location, number of rooms and size of the apartment since some locations have longer waiting times than others. Family apartments are unfurnished and applied via regular application. TOAS has only a few family apartments with furniture. If any of them are available, they will be announced on the Quickly available apartments.

Studios

A studio is an individual apartment where you have your own bathroom and kitchen in the apartment. Studios are the most popular apartment type at TOAS, which is why the waiting time is longer than for shared or family apartments.

TOAS studios are always unfurnished (no beds, tables or chairs), but kitchens are always equipped with an oven, a stove, and a refrigerator. These unfurnished studios are always applied via regular application.

Pets are allowed in studios (except studios with a shared kitchen).

Apartments with a Friend

You may also apply for an apartment together with a friend. You may apply for a shared apartment or for a family apartment. The availability of shared apartments for friends is very limited, as it requires both rooms of the same apartment to be empty at the same time.

When applying for an apartment with a friend, keep in mind that both submit the application individually.

Home for a friend
A tenant living in a shared apartment can “offer” a home for a friend, i.e. in case there is a room available/becoming available the tenant living in a shared apartment may inform this to a friend who may then apply for the particular room (excluding Aug-Sept). The friend needs to submit a regular application to a shared apartment and contact TOAS office and ask for the specific apartment s/he wants to move in. This is only possible when this is done before TOAS has offered the apartment to someone else. NOTE! Home for a friend arrangement is not possible in the summer/autumn when the waiting time for shared apartments is longer than usual.

Short-term residency

See the application for the short-term residency rooms here.

You may apply for short-term residency if you are studying somewhere else but coming to Tampere for a summer job, an internship or a cram school, or you work at the university in Tampere as a researcher or post-doctoral (distance studying in Tampere is not enough).

  • The tenancy agreement will always be fixed-term and may not be extended.
  • For post-doctorals or other researchers, fixed-term tenancy agreement will be signed until 31.7. of the current year (as the full time degree students are our priority).
  • Apartments for short-term residency are shared apartments and are mainly located outside the city center (studios are not available for short-term residency). If you need a family apartment, please contact our Housing office. When coming with a family, do not submit an application for family apartments, before you have received instructions from the Housing office.
  • Submit the application at the earliest one month before you need the accommodation.

Kitchen types

Kitchenette (Finnish abbreviation: kk)

A kitchenette is equipped with all basic kitchen appliances (unless otherwise noted): stove, oven, sink, cooker hood and refrigerator. A kitchenette is typically smaller than a kitchen, often placed in an alcove-like space.

Kitchen/living-room (Finnish abbreviation: tk)

A kitchen/living-room means that the kitchen and living room are in the same space. Usually, the kitchen is on one side of this space but there is no wall separating the two. This kind of kitchen is equipped with all basic kitchen appliances (unless otherwise noted): stove, oven, sink, cooker hood and refrigerator, often also a freezer.

Cooking place (Finnish abbreviation: kt)

A cooking place is also in the same space as the living-room, but it is smaller and has less cabinet space than a kitchen/living-room. A cooking place is equipped with the most basic kitchen appliances (unless otherwise noted): stove, oven, sink, cooker hood and refrigerator.

Kitchen (Finnish abbreviation: k)

A kitchen is usually a separate room, or a space separated from the living-room at least with a partial wall. A kitchen is equipped with all basic kitchen appliances (unless otherwise noted): stove, oven, sink, cooker hood, refrigerator and freezer. The refrigerator and freezer types and models may vary.

Small kitchen

Some small apartments have small kitchens with limited facilities. Typically, a small kitchen is equipped with two cooker rings, a small sink, cooker hood and a small fridge under the cooking table. There is no oven in a small kitchen.

Shared kitchen

This means that there is one kitchen in shared use for all tenants living on the same floor (whose apartments do not have a kitchen). A shared kitchen is usually equipped with a stove, oven, sink, cooker hood and refrigerators for shared use.

Please note that the kitchen floor plans are provided only as examples to demonstrate the differences between different kitchen types. The kitchen of a specific location may not be exactly the same as the example floor plan.

Also note that the kitchen appliances in different locations vary in terms of size and model.
