A room in a shared apartment is normally the apartment type that is the easiest and fastest to get. In a shared apartment you will have your own individual bedroom, and you will share the kitchen and the bathroom with 1-3 other students of the same gender.
All bedroom doors have locks – your privacy is secured.
When living in a shared apartment, all tenants are responsible for their own rooms. Together they are also responsible for cleaning the common areas in the apartment.
A room in a shared apartment is the most affordable option.
Pets are not allowed in shared apartments. Normally all shared apartments are unfurnished, except Mikontalo. When applying with the international application (for students moving from abroad), all rooms are always furnished.
TOAS offers a selection of family apartments, from one-bedroom up to three-bedroom apartments. When applying for a family apartment, applicants with children are prioritized in queuing. You can apply for a family apartment with a friend as well but both of you need to be students in Tampere.
For those who appreciate a spacious apartment, a studio or a family apartment is a good option.
You can also apply for a family apartment alone, a flat mate is not required. The waiting time for a family apartment differs according to the location since some areas have longer queues than others. Family apartments are unfurnished and applied with the “regular” application. TOAS has a few family apartments with furniture, if any of them are available, they will be announced on the Quickly available apartments.
A studio is an individual apartment where you have your own bathroom and kitchen in the apartment. Studios are the most popular apartment type at TOAS, which is why the waiting time is longer than for shared apartments.
TOAS studios are always unfurnished (no beds, tables or chairs), but kitchens are always equipped with an oven, a stove, and a refrigerator. These unfurnished studios are always applied with the regular application.
Pets are allowed in studios (except studios with a shared kitchen).
Apartments with a Friend
You can also apply for an apartment together with a friend. Together, you can apply for a shared apartment or for a family apartment. The availability of shared apartments for friends is very limited, as it requires a whole shared apartment to be empty for it to be available for friends.
When applying for an apartment with a friend, keep in mind that both submit the application individually.
Home for a friend
A tenant living in a shared apartment can “offer” a home for a friend, meaning that in case there is a room available/becoming available can the tenant living in the shared apartment tell about it to a friend who can apply to the same apartment (excluding Aug-Sept). The friend needs to submit an application to a shared apartment and then be in contact with the Housing office and tell which specific apartment he or she wants to move in. This is only possible when this is done before we have offered the apartment to someone else.
You may apply for short-term residency if
- you are studying somewhere else but coming to Tampere for a summer job, an internship or a cram school
- you work at the university in Tampere as a researher or post-doctoral
The tenancy agreement will always be fixed-term and may not be extended. Apartments for short-term residency are shared apartments and are mainly located outside the city center. Studios are not available for short-term residency. Please note that during the summer, apartments/rooms are rented up to 31 July. Submit the application at the earliest two months before you need the accommodation.
Note! At the moment we do not offer short-term accommodation since we give priority for the students in Tampere.

No Deposit Apartments
In some of our locations, apartments can be rented without a deposit fee. The tenant’s responsibilities with for taking good care of the apartment and rental payments stay unchanged. When moving out, where the final cleaning has been disregarded, the apartment requires repairs, keys have been lost or rent remain unpaid, the costs will be charged from each tenant separately.
If, after giving notice, the tenant has taken good care of the apartment, has performed the final cleaning and paid the rents accordingly, will the tenant’s responsibilities with regard to TOAS will once the keys have been returned.
TOAS reserves the right to impose the deposit fee given in the price list for the apartment in case the tenant has a bad credit rating or for some other justifiable reason on behalf of the lessor. A justifiable reason may be the tenant’s eralier problematic tenancy with TOAS or previous mistreatment of a TOAS apartment.
